D&AD Monotype - Main content/context, Research Expansion and Initial delivery Idea's

Base Content & Context
The initial source for where outcomes will come from will revolve around a starting point from the Digital Revolution a transitional point from mechanical to electronic to digital technologies within the 50s to the 70s to now and more future oriented cyberspace technologies.

Having a full understanding of a subject is important before beginning to think of ideas on how to present issues or ideas around this area. Strong research will be the key to creating an outcome that has strong meaning and is communicated effectively rather than just making it look cool and have a subtle "digital aesthetic", this just wont be sufficient.

Digital Revolution overview
Using the idea of a digital revolution as a progression from the industrial revolution would expand on past investigations into how distributions like the Gutenberg arose through periods like the industrial revolution the introduction of cyberspace distributions like the internet within the digital revolution.

The idea of the technological revolution is becoming a subject for change but for under developed countries it raises the risk of these areas missing out on these benefits, leaving them in an even worse state of alienation.

Through rapid expansion between the 80s too 2010 there has been a huge rise in technological engagement, giving me a timeframe to base my concept on to reference the rise of technology responsible or relatable to archiving.

Some of my past investigations investigated how technology become more accessible to benefit peoples lives, the development of the computer was one of the most iconic during the 1980s, a key period worth investigating as this allowed the access of data as well as the storage and began introducing secondary devices of storage like floppy disks, CDs, USBs all the way up to cloud storage within the insurgence of the internet. All is responsible and leads on from the introduction of the computer.

Looking into converted technologies is also an expansion of my investigation into the development of communication elements like the spoken word too typographic systems too audio books, this idea could be expanded through the emulation of technologies that transition from the analog to the digital as a form of referencing physical archiving and digital archiving. Key ones been;

Analog computer to Digital computer
VHS to DVD
Analog photography to Digitial
Analog cinema to animation
Printing development
Video CD to Blueray 4K

The computer wasnt just used in a sense as a personal computer, the technology involved using microprocessor lead to the embedding of computer technology to things like cameras to enhance there image capture and storage capabilities while the main impact had huge social impact in the 90s with the huge accessibility to the internet with the leading to things like Wikipedia and Social media as ways of storing extreme contrasting elements of data but still data all the same.

The arise of websites like Wikipedia and Social media brought in privacy and information sharing concerns, open source wikipedia allowing the editing or uploading of information that people research and assume to be genuine, an encyclopedia that can be edited through cyberspace technology, or images of ones self been uploaded to Facebook without there consent.

These issues also lead to the idea of copyrighting, questioning even more the safety of data as it can then be replicated and shared through pirating websites making it lose its genuineness.

When looking into computer based storage issues arise with the ideas of encryption, if a file is encrypted with a certain algorithm it can not be accessed if the same software isn't available to unpack the data, showing how increased safety can lead to increased issues in discovering and investigating historic references.

8 Technologies within digital revolution that will change health industry
Another area worth investigating as a means of showing the impact of technology is the use of technology to benefit the health industry, mainly focusing on how complex analog machines have been interpreted into accessible devices and digital outputs.

For example the smartphone used as a form of health monitoring, something that could only be done by physical check ups.

Or online doctors, for when small ailments are required a virtual doctor can be contacted.

This interview with Viginia Herrernan outlines key points that technology has aided ideas of research, brought people together and helped the health industry. All benefits of technology but these introduce ideas of invasion, like privacy invasion, data corruption and such it also began to introduce issues for general browsing like the arising of phishing emails, virus, pornography sites etc. Turning something that was seen as a social benefit to people too something more sinister.

Digital Dark Age
As a method of showing the limitations and dangers of such rapid progression within technologies theories of a digital dark age have been investigated.

Ideas at present we can take from this are the problems that will arise with archiving of historic electronic documents, like physical artifacts used to be stored as a way of referencing history electronic files may become difficult or impossible to read due to changing file formats and devices, for example floppy disk storage is now pretty redundant.

The benefits of digital recording and archiving allow photos, audio and video to be stored but if they cant be read to reference history 200 years down the line there seems no point in it.

One classic example as mentioned was from the 1976 Viking Mars NASA mission that when data was extracted from the magnetic tapes there was no way of converting it to be read as the original programmers had either left or died leaving the data useless.

As a way of showing the further potentials it would be good to show how to prevent this from happening, creating a universal file format that can be standardly read across multiple platforms for example PDF but at current the internet is the most permanent form of archiving, uploading onto websites that will always be there so long as the code isn't destroyed.

EXPAND ON OTHER ELEMENTS THAT COULD INVADE THE BENEFITS AND TURN TECHNOLOGY INTO A PROBLEM RATHER THAN A SOLUTION.
