Secret 7 - Finals, Rationale & Evaluation
Final & Rationale
The Jam where a band heavily involved in the Punk & Mod movement so it was nice to create a strong link between something so iconic within that era that could then be used as a visual reference for them as a band. Art school provided a literal link to work from, as students where strongly involved with the Punk & Mod movement within there Agendas, distributing zines, posters and other printed matter from there creative residencies.
The final design for The Jam - Art School cover is a collection of Punk-zines and a 3D cassette image, digitally repurposed using design software showing a transition from physicality and DIY process's to the introduction of computer programs. To show the tactility of printed publication's physical textures where created using analogue marks then digitally recreated to add depth to the flatness of the vector zines.
The use of a monochrome scheme comes from the past limitations when reproducing zines by either photocopying or one colour screen prints while the pale yellow hue references newsprints a common stock used for these types of publications.
Evaluation
At current this is one of my most disappointing projects, the concept is quite strong but I feel I really didn't develop the idea as well as it could be developed in terms of the visual development process. My usual process involves lots of scamping and figuring out a visual system to develop on, taking key bits from all my best scamps and ideas this time I didn't really do that. Same with the research, I could have gathered a wide range instead I just stuck to gathering research that influenced an idea that was very one directional focusing solely on cut & paste aesthetics, collage, abstract aesthetics. I should have explore more typographic examples and looked into how iconography and layout could be brought more into it as punk zines used a lot of type heavy visuals alongside photographs. I didn't explore any of this.
In terms of my methodology though I have stuck too that, transitioning between print and the digital, in this example repurposing print formats in a digital outcome, it was good that I could effectively apply this methodology to this project using the term Art School as my main reasoning to show this transition from hands on DIY process's back in the 70s to the over saturation of digital in todays Art Schools.
