GFSmith Colorplan Archive - Initial Ideas & Process Choice
Key Delivery/Process Ideas
In terms of delivery and process theres 3 key ideas that I can go off that will both compliment the paper quality are very process driven and link with my COP investigations.
Digital Letterpress idea
Using the square format could be a starting point of designing a glyph or letter for my ongoing digital letterpress idea. The idea been that the letter or glyph starts out using traditional hands on process's, is digitally designed on screen to then be produced using a Laser-cuter and crafted into letterpress style pieces that reference woodblock and hot metal type.
The key focus on this is to show a transition between tradition and technology within the print process and communication of information
Digital Stencil Screen-print or Spray Paint
As stenciling was a traditional and original method of screen printing I thought it be a good process to use with the involvement of digital technologies as a way of printing the pattern for the stencil out then either hand cutting the stencil or using a laser cuter as another means of bringing digital into traditional process's.
Laser cut would provide a more accurate stencil and a stronger link to bringing in technology.
Hand cutting the digital stencil would reference digital print as a transition of screen-printing but hand cutting the shapes out would give a nice analogue aesthetic bringing the overall outcome back to tradition.

Contextual ideas for visuals
Patterns to reflect the color green
- Nature
- Well being
- Youth
- Freshness
- Calm
- Jealousy
- Dragons & Monsters
- Poison & Sickness
- Growth
- Grass
Work off an RGB Color scheme, reflects digital values within a primarily traditional print process. Nice contrast.
Color of emeralds, these hexagonal stones all have there own unique shapes and textures as a way of grading there quality based on color, clarity, cut and weight. Some interesting interactions of shape could be created working from these ideas.

Color connotations based on positive vibes, lots of interesting aesthetics can be created from the simple idea of positivity.
Most important color in islam, maybe use some religious quotes wrote in islamic type.
Chicago river is dyed red every St Patricks day, the shape of this river could be the base of some interesting aesthetics.
An important color used during the Renaissance period with green reflecting the wealth of merchants and bankers, while Red was equally important within Nobles so these 2 colors could work well together.
Green is used on billiard tables, could provide an interesting aesthetic using simple shapes taken from these tables.
The idea of money could be presented with a supporting idea revolving around how it was a strong color used in the introduction of casinos in Venice in the 16th century.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz could be an interesting theme to run off for visuals, quite abstract patterns, use of words and imagery could come from this. The use of Green is used within Emerald City and people walk around with green tinted glasses as a means of visualizing the financial system in America at the time with discussions on the transition from gold to paper money.

Possible chosen Process & Reasoning
Digital screen printing will be the chosen print process, experimenting with digital printing the stencil and hand cutting out certain visual elements with the other visual elements coming from a lasercut stencil as a means of referencing the transition between traditional printing and the potential of cyberspace technologies within print.
Hand cut stencils will have a more analogue aesthetic while the lasercut stencils will have more accuracy showing the limitations of traditional and contemporary process's.
If this doesnt quite work the idea of merging together digital and traditional methods could be carried out by using a digital printer and a screen print over lay, the screen print could show the limitations of digital printing by using white, neon or metallic inks.
Future ideas for expansion
As mentioned the idea for expansion into a print series based on the RGB scheme could be developed on, showing a transition from screen (RGB) to print with 3 individual concepts that revolve around and resonate with the Blue and Red colour values.
Basic Concept/Delivery for print series
Create a print series based on emerald (green), ruby (red) and bentonite (blue), figuring out mini concepts to inspire individual visual reactions using the transition between RGB to print as an overarching focus.

Colour plan papers that compliment the lockwood green for the RGB scheme. They are quite desaturated in there tones as I didn't want something so vibrant as this was too much of a digital representation of RGB values, the dulled down colors have a much more tactile feel and will support the print outcome.

Using elements from screen collaboration would allow visual cues to be made to take into a print format, using the idea of screen marks or any other digital screen based process like desktop publishing, design software, video editing etc would allow connections to be made between print and digital.
