Secret 7 - Research
Main focus to expand on through research
Create a digital repurposing of print based outcomes produced during Punk protests, mainly focusing on what came out of Art Schools at that period, DIY values, Screen printing, Zines, Collage etc. Feed this visual research in as a way of developing and informing further ideas for a final resolution.
Research
Working with a monochrome scheme will be the first thing to consider when expanding on ideas of DIY zines, they where quickly reproduced through photocopying and 1 pull screen printing so this should be one limitation to consider.
The use of shapes here are very nice though, a variety of shapes that work along a series of formats with a set layout of text while the shapes change, these shapes act as a nice visual que while the typography on the top of the page adds context.
The use of analogue patterns coming from physical scanned in textures works well with the solid vector shapes, considering a contrast of analogue texture and shape will help strengthen the idea of DIY, avoiding that perfect aesthetic that digital often results in.
A very tongue in cheek set of collages, slightly offensive, something that shows the rebellion and freedom of Punk based artwork. No limitations. Taking the neutral washed out colours from these works will influence my digital repurposing of collages. The use of random hand rendered text is a consideration, how to repurpose hand wrote text into something digital yet still maintains that classic DIY aesthetic.
Punk has a certain energy too it and as I am repurposing using digital mediums these collages certainly have a very DIY, collage aesthetic with a very digital look and feel. Very abstract and very energetic through the use of clashing colour, gradients, abstract/weird and random imagery.
Art school was often something that appreciated hands on process's and is evident in methodology, creating something that doesn't look generic is something that was avoided back then and is something that is important when creating this outcome.
The use of 3D, large type, texture, and photoshop background singularly are only simple deliveries, but as a whole they create an abstract mash up that could definitely be repurposed to show a transition between physical DIY zines to digital repurposing.
The layout of these designs as just typography are relatively simple, a typical hierarchy of Header, footer, folio and body copy information. Quite structured even with the type been positioned around the abstract shape. This organization of typography and the message been delivered is important even when creating abstract and high impact designs. This was evident in DIY zines, they had abstract imagery but the information been presented was clear.
The paint mark is a very abstract mark that is a digital repurposing of something physical and print based, its going to be a key focus of my idea that I digital repurpose something print based.
These screen printed print marks show an obvious link between the print and the digital, these print marks originally are for digital printing proofs and screen collaboration but have been repurposed from the screen and the digital printer to a print output often used within punk zines. The overlaying of colours like this is something that cant be replicated with digital design, showing these sort of limitations would be effective.
The use of stock is important when creating high volume prints, as if there is only one colour involved the stock needs to add a little more a visual kick. These record sleeves by Cecillia S use the simple limited use of a material/stock colour and 1 colour print, depending on the impact of the imagery, type and layout to carry further visual impact.
Atlas
Atlas studio have a very cut and paste aesthetic too there work and often work between analogue and digital within there process something that resonates perfect with my methodology and my plans for this brief. This identity works on an idea of scanned in inverted images to create an analogue film/negative look and feel. This idea of a negative image is strengthened through a single monotone scheme throughout the brand again showing how limited colour can still hold a strong impact and draw more focus into a singular element of the concept rather than multiple elements confusing the message.
Moby Digg
The use of the blue and red has a very digital feel, so these 2 colours will be used within my developments to strengthen the idea of a digital repurposing. The warping of the glyphs has a very abstract aesthetic, looking like its been scanned in, the use of a scanner could be a modern interpretation of the photocopier, altering the aesthetic of something physical turning it into something digital with some hands on manipulation changing the look as it gets scanned in. The deconstruction of the glyphs could also be taken forward
The folding of paper would be a very good way of showing something physical locked into a digital output, this idea showing folds within a vector outcome will be one of the key aspects I take forward, playing around with the shading of the folds using analogue textures rather than digital vectors.
The use of altered images was used a lot during Punk artworks, if not defacing public figures creating very abstract or psychedelic images. This image has a very analogue feel but it also feels quite industrial through the use of monochrome schemes and the textures and robust shape itself.
Moderat
Experimental type will work perfect when it comes to digitally repurposing common typographic traits punk zines and dadaist works share. Taking note of the deconstructed layout of the words and the overlaying of the type often found in photocopied and screen printed zines while the red and blue colour holds a very digital look and feel.
The use of iconography also further helps strengthen messages, all work produced during the punk era had an agenda so consider how these agendas can be visualised maybe using iconography or some other visual or textual connotations.
The skewed type has a certain motion too it, creating depth within something quite flat but also adding context to the words "dane" think about how I can add context to my message within visual references.
Moving on from the idea of folding, words could be made using this idea, again making something digital that is produced quite flat using design programs feel quite physical. An effective way of digitally repurposing physical print outcomes.
The cut & paste aesthetic here and the weird abstract look and feel has a very punk DIY aesthetic too it, but the neatness and the application of well layed out typography within a column grid shows the potential of digital layout programs. Keeping things monochrome again shows the past limitations but the addition of colour keeps the eye moving around the design moving from the flat vector images to the cut & paste photographs. A very abstract and random design that can be unpicked and read into.
The warping of typography could expand on ideas of defacing and rebellion, here it works in a series of different warps altering the perspective and way the typography is read, adding impact to the design and also been quite engaging through the bad legibility. Something that was quite intriguing about punk zines was there bad quality, almost making them what they was. This idea of playing off something quite bad in terms of aesthetics maybe a good starting point for a strong visual resolution.
A series of digital collages, using texture, vector shape, black and white images, shape, pattern and 3D objects to create a design that again draws people in to unpick whats going on, I think this level of engagement is important especially considering im planning on digitally repurposing something physical. Something that is supposed to be engaged with and distributed. The addition of clashing colours would certainly emulate the idea of an art school, a way of expressing creativity a nice visual representation of the distribution of Punk based artworks as all these documents where distributed through DIY methods or Art schools.
Some very literal examples to influence the DIY and print aesthetic ideas, digitally repurposing things like scanned in textures, warped text, folded paper, monochrome schemes, offensive content, a cut and paste aesthetic.
Ideas could come from the scribbling out and correcting of content this was a common theme in punk zines, if not scribbling out covering with a cut and paste word and re-photocopied suggesting an idea of layering within a digital output could work well?
