Secret 7 - Brief Introduction & Problem Analysis and Track Choice & Analysis
Brief & Problem Analysis
Secret 7 is a yearly competition inviting creatives to submit too a number of tracks either with a digital submission or a physical submission, the later leaving the creative process fully open with the possibilities.
The only limitations is the 7inch format and not to create an obvious reference to the track within the design, ie not using the track or artist name apart from that as long as it is contained within a 184 x 184mm image with a 3mm bleed at 300dpi in a CMYK Colour output there are no limitations.
Initial thoughts are how I will go about interpreting certain elements of the track into a concept that can result in a visual resolution.
Creating a design that has visual impact and a strong concept that can be communicated in a concise description.

Track choice & Analysis and Initial ideas
I had a choice between Jack Garrat, Worry and The Jam, Art School both shared a number of appealing first impressions from first listening and analysing the track.
Worry
Jack Garrat - Worry is part of his debut album so the idea of something been fresh and new could be something to go off.
He has a varied tonal range in his voice, this could be represented very well with a visual experimentation with color, tone, pattern to name a few.
Slow paced song, this could give potential to how the design could be slowly unpicked by the end user, creating something quite deep that could be read into and understood.
Art School
I decided to go with The Jam - Art School, it had a lot more going for it when it came to the analysis and is something I feel I can add my current methodology of digital repurposing of traditional mediums too.
Fast Paced allows room for high impact instant recognizable design.
1977 album release, could base the concept around something happening during this year.
Work from the lyric "Time is motion and the hands are fast" ideas of preserving a memory come to my mind, this definitely resonates with my methodology of appreciating the past within future oriented outcomes.
Work from the lyric "Wear any clothes just as long as there bright" this has a strong visual possibility within it.
Look into there roots and the meaning behind the song, ideas of;
Rebellion
Punk Movment
Talking about media brainwashing
Iconic events of 1977;
Star Wars
Andy Warhols Bad
Release of Apple II computers
New York City blackout
Punk Explosion
Punk Theme possible visual references;
Smiley face T-Shirt
Anarchy
Rebellion
Freedom
Collage Aesthetic & Dadist feel
Punk Zine
Anger & Protest
Energy
Messy aesthetic AKA "meisthetic"
Rawness
Hand Lettering
Stenciling
DIY
Xerox copying/screenprint
Create a digital repurposing of one or more of these points to create a link between the name Art School and iconic events that resonate with this time, ideas of Punk, Collage Aesthetic and Zines work perfect with this idea of an Art School though, using print and publications as methods of protest.
