Cheap Festival Poster - Finals, Rationale & Evaluation
Concept, Final & Rationale
The idea was to work within the black & white limitations and explore the term edge in a way that investigated how technology has taken ransoming from the physical too the digital, going from targeting high profile individuals for physical money ransoms too a global targeting showing a larger social issue through the use of technology breaking this limitation of an edge been a reference too ransoming only been an issue for high profile victims.
The poster explores the transition from physical ransoming to ransomware targeting victims through phishing emails, encrypting there files and demanding a ransom as the fees go up over time, much like an auction for your information back. This auctioning of your information is represented using the physical to digital transition between a physical auction to a virtual auction, the blurred screen shot is of physical files while the iconography of blank document shows the relevant digital transition.
Each visual element has a purpose to strengthening the overall concept while referencing the transition of a certain subject from physical to digital.
The circles represent physical coins and monetary value, which coincide with the bit coin and the multiple currencies to show the progression and growing global problem from something that involved physical money exchange for a physical kidnap/ransom too the theft of files and information on a global scale.
The Maktub copyrighting shows the ownership of the victims files untill payment is made, contained within a shape that references a pixel within the modular grid system as a way of showing digital ransoming.
The format is based around a desktop screen, with a scanned in halftone repurposed letter fold line that works with the phishing email content to show a transition from a physical ransom letter to a phishing email while the BIT COIN ONLY payment demand presented in a deconstructed way shows the typical cut and paste aesthetic of a ransom note within a digital output.
The deconstructed layout of type and image all coincides with the idea of encryption and decryption of files, which is supported by the use of a locked and unlocked padlock presented in between a time frame that shows the increasing time and money value that the victim suffers until payment is made.

A GIF created as a way of simply finishing the brief off with an application of my COP methodology showing the full transition from physical to digital within the print outcome, back too a digital capturing. The folding of the poster supports the idea of unlocking and locking of information under ransom.
Evaluation
I am very happy with this project and pleased I got through to the competition and am just waiting on some images of my poster in context as its only a small competition its hard to find images online. It was nice to expand on the disposable society style briefs where I produce an outcome that explores a current issue, and it was a perfect opportunity to again use my COP methodology that looks into technology and its effect on traditional/old subjects. In this instance it wasn't to do with communication or distribution as a focus, it was the transition of physical to digital ransoming, and how communication methods like email and cyberspace technologies like the internet have created a global problem and issue.
The use of individual visual elements to add further context and meaning was carried out very well, each individual element was considered and worked together as a whole to reference the whole concept. A very successful link between context and visual resolution.
It was good to work within limitations and have a given theme to add too the inclusion of my chosen subject, the restrictions allowed me to keep within certain boundaries and helped me keep a focus on what issue I wanted to raise. The idea of edge allowed me to bring in the idea of showing how technology breaks limitations but in this case not for the better.
