Cheap Festival Poster - Visual Development, Concept refinement & Production

Cheap Festival Poster - Visual Development, Concept refinement & Production

Scamp & Idea development
Show the hiding of the criminals through masks and the concealment of visuals like warping text, blocking out imagery, blurring photographs.

Show a transition from physical money payments for ransom release too bitcoin using the idea that the problem is going global and encompassed by technology and the internet.

Use iconography to communicate ideas of security.

Show multiple currencies to show the global problem, also adds a large visual impact and added contextual meaning to the scale of the problem when combining the idea of bitcoins.

Create a timescale within the layout, using the layout of type and image in a progressive way using scaling, positioning and color to show the increasing price of getting your files back.

Split the design up 50 - 50, one half showing physical ransoming using elements inspired by ransom notes the other showing the idea of encryption and digital currencies.

Create icons of blank documents and unlocked and locked padlocks to show the encryption and theft of these documents. Present in a deconstructed layout to work on this cut & paste aesthetic influences from ransom notes.

Add visual references to keys, locks and encryptions within typeface manipulation. Adding visual reference and contextual meaning too them.

Use repeated shape of things like circles to connote the idea of increased financial problems with ransomware, connect this too a layout influenced by Ebay to show the idea that its like bidding for your possessions back within a virtual auction. Transitioning from physical auctions too cyber auctions.

Create literal iconography of computers for the digital element of ransoming with deconstructed words contained within squares and random typefaces to show ransom notes. Also they could reference qwerty keyboard keys to further this transition.

Scribbled type to show rushed demands of a ransom contrasting with an idea of organized information locked within a structured layout to show the encrypted and stolen files within digital ransoming. From chaos to order.

Break up the bitcoin icon and create shapes that reference ideas of security, money, computers and files within an image only design that use the bitcoin as a central visual focus and carries the whole concept. A digital version of a ransom note that is made of broken up letterings.

Use a graph to show the increasing statistics of this problem.

Use a blank document as the main visual focus to carry the other elements. The background of the design with the foreground containing content from a phishing email, a screen shot of an ebay auction of physical files to show the transition from ransoming a physical thing too ransoming digital things.

Trap this warped document within a black background to solidify the idea that its a digital problem.

Scanned in paper fold to split the document in half. Showing a digital repurposing of a physical ransom note using the horizontal Cheap Poster template as a reference to a desktop screen. From the physical letter too the desktop ransom screen.

Use glyphs that reference keys like F that work with shapes that represent locks.

Sow a transition from something in a mass of text condensed into a lock. To show the encryption of someones files. The positioning of type on angles, perspective, sizing and tone could support this idea of progression

Use numbers along these deconstructed and abstract type arrangement to show a timescale and increased value too gain ownership of files back.

Use the copyright symbol in connection with the word maktub to show how they now own your files through the invasion using technology.

Use a large high impact image or icon showing connotations of a physical auction with a screenshot of ebay as a virtual auction, showing the transition from physical to digital. Using supporting text like "Bit coin only" to show the impact of technology on these financial payment.

Stretch out the type to expand  on the idea of a sliding scale to show the progression of a problem.

Scan in a physical ransom note and create a digital repurposed version to contrast with it.

Refined Concept & Delivery plan
The final scamp system and concept plan to begin to digitize, using individual visual elements to support the overall message.

A screen shot of an ebay auction of physical files, to show the auctioning of ones files as a means of showing the transition from physical to digital ransoming/theft.

Create a timescale using vertical alignments of type, image, lines and iconography with a locked padlock and unlocked padlock showing the encryption of a victims files to the unlocking of the files, with a scale of money values.

Deconstructed glyphs across a modular grid layout to show the broken up aesthetic of a ransom note, the modular grid references the pixels on a screen further solidifying the horizontal template choice.

Use circle icons and the bitcoin symbol to show the transition from physical money too digital moneys for paying ransoms.

Scanned in and digitized fold line from a letter, showing a digitized version of the ransom note.

Along with this create a blank document icon to show the digital repurposing of the physical files within the Ebay auction.

Maybe play around with a tongue in cheek message as an expansion to overlay on top of the printed poster within a digital GIF thanking the victim for there payment and welcoming them to there files back.

Digital Development
Began working with the idea of creating a phishing email repurposed into a digital emulation of a letter, warping it within a digital captured background with an ebay auction adding context too the phishing email that uses paypal as a way of drawing victims in.

The use of a halftone shadow added depth too the letter making it feel a little more physical with the addition of multiple currencies showing the scale of this global problem.

The ebay screenshot of files was blurred out to show the idea of been hidden until payment is received.

Going back to the desktop orientation, deconstructing a quote saying Bit Coin Only showing the demands of the ransom, positioned in a way that digital references a ransom note. The use of heavyweight uppercase madras is a very geometric face that has a digital vibe, rather than using a mash up of fonts like a normal ransom note.

Adding the currencies along the edges frame the content up, as the phishing email content felt a little out of balance within the space, adding the scanned in digitized halftone letter fold further helped construct everything together, the outline meant it wasn't a dominant visual element.

Adding blocks of black and reversing type added too the cut & paste aesthetic and randomness of ransom notes while adding more structure and adding a pixel representation too the design.

The circles reference physical coins while the bitcoin symbol shows the transition from physical currency payment too bitcoin payments showing the impact of technology within ransoming.

Creating a more deconstructed layout that has a feeling of encryption and decryption, supported by glyphs that represent keys that resonate well with the idea of locking and unlocking access to ones information. The gradient halftone squares have money values and timescales on them to show the increase of price to get your files back further strengthened by the increasing size of the squares.

The re addition of the ebay screenshot further strengthens how its like bidding for your possessions back. The use of black solid locks shows how everything is hidden and locked away but the clear one with the pound sign shows how they are accessible again once payment is made.

Stretching out the type to show the idea od a sliding scale for payment and how it increases as time goes on, this edit to the text will add contextual support too the other visual references but as a whole this design with the phishing email communicates the problem clear enough. Visually though it feels a little lost and needs some more supporting visual elements too add a feeling of chaos to reference ransom notes again.

The use of an anonymous mask shows the idea that these criminals are hidden behind a criminal gang and this has connotations with crime using technology.

Paying around with the copyright symbol idea, how your files are owned by Maktub. The left justified feels right as it feels locked into place within this shape that references pixels made up of multiple squares. The reversed out white type has a nice visual impact.

Adding more visual cues to support the idea of encryption and decryption of files, still doesnt explain the full process from files been encrypted to payment been sent from the victim too gain access and decrypt there files.

Going back to the better visual layout and adding more contextual meaning too it through the addition of the ebay screen shot, the stretched type, the timescale and the unlocking and locking of files for monetary exchange. This is really starting to work better now and theres a certain element of chaos that resonates with ransom notes but theres also structure to work with the idea of encryption and decryption.

The bitcoin symbol aesthetically works better overlaying the O, creating a link and merging together the physical coins to the cyberspace alternative payment.

Using the multiple currencies to work as the background to show the scale of the problem, transferring into the foreground where bitcoin is the universal payment for this global problem.

4 final ideas that incorporate all the same elements but within different layouts so the idea now is to chose which carries the concept better aesthetically but also strengthens the message and emulation of the problem as a whole.

This one has everything, from the phishing email too the unlocking and unlocking of the files too the physical to digital money symbols.

The F glyphs here work very well in terms of showing the unlocking and locking, they support the padlock images but spacial there feels like there is too much white space and the idea of chaos is a little fluid and free I want it to be fixed within the pixel/modular grid.

Probably the worst one when it comes to everything feeling locked in together in a structured layout, the phishing emails should the main focus as this is the starting point of the problem but the digital variation of a blank file strengthens the message.

Submitted within the template.

Production
Final version with an expansion that shows the tongue in cheek unlocking of the victims files.

Huge format printer, it really changes the whole look and feel taking a visual resolution designed on a small 13" screen too a meter wide print, appreciating what looked like small details on screen and when printed look a lot higher quality.
