Digital Letterpress - Idea Refinement & Concept and Delivery Plan
Idea refinement
Expanding on the initial ideas it was important to figure out the format as a basis for a concept rather than an actual concept itself, as the format would be the pivotal point of the concept anyway so working in a different way when generating an idea was called for.
1 item needed to show the digital repurposing of something that referenced traditional principles.
1 item or element should include entire textual content if the main focus is the visualisation of the essay content as a way of providing a basis for visual reactions on the progression of technology within typography production and distributions. This way theres a contextual link to all the visual designs produced, sort of like a guide for understanding and decoding all the visual responses?
Include hand rendered to 3D typography within a physical print outcome to show a full range of typographic production development.
Think about different binding techniques to show the progression of publication distribution, from loose leafs, to perfect bound to zines to PDF/ebook.
Print the internet, a simple statement of the digital repurposed in print?
The main visual focus after the sorting of the format will come from individual mini concepts and visual deliveries of essay content.

Rough Format ideas
Ideas ranging from spiral bound publications with perforated leafs that can be torn out for the user to engage with the prints and the quality/limitations/advantages of each process.
Include a combined body of repurposed formats like a newspaper combining a digital news app. This collection of documents would then be bound with an X band as a form of referencing how mass amounts of documents used to be bound and archived.
Staple bound zine to reference the punk period where political quick runs of Xerox and screen print publications where made. Typography distribution always had a social or political agenda so paying attention to these kind of publications is important, a poster zine could be a nice extra that allows contextual information to be applied within the zine itself but a visual representation of the information within the unfolded zine > poster.
Concertina shows an idea of a timeline.
Raw edge bind shows the process involved in perfect binding a traditional method of bookmaking that goes back to the production of the 42 line Gutenberg bible.
As theres a strong focus on an idea of research, the overall document needs to reference a file when everything is constructed together. Some sort of binding will be required, possibly a ring-binder or an arco clip to hold all the documents together?
Defined Concept & Delivery plan
An overall contextual visualisation of a text investigating a full range of technologies pre and post Guttenburg to do with the distribution and production of typography and future potentials within a cyberspace age.
The production and delivery concept comes from an idea of a digital letterpress, emulating an iconic method of traditional typography distribution with the inclusion of cyberspace technologies, using the laser cutter as a key production method for digitally repurposing typography and imagery to contextualise key periods of mass communication and distributions from cave carved hieroglyphics to the internet and beyond. Showing the key advantages and limitations of each key distribution advancement alongside supporting contextual and visual content from a book containing my essay to link all these visual experiments too.
All contained within a set of book's that references the progression of publication productions and layouts and there limitations, there varying purposes and relevant print techniques ranging from screen printed zines to digitally printed perfect bound books bound and collectively contained in a way that references the old and the new.
Defined Format & Mockup
The overall idea is the publication as a whole is a file of contextual and visual representations of research and experiments, when opened up and deconstructed each book will reference important periods discussed in my research and investigations.
The idea of a file been to contain the chaotic body of research and visual reactions in an organised fashion much like the idea of typography been a visual system ordering the spoken word into an understood visual language system.
Combined together the ratio of the books will reference a 2 column grid and header, a common limitation of Gutenberg layouts.

Formats will include a small zine that shows the digital repurposing of a textualis style blackletter that visualises the advantages and limitations of Gutenberg principles and Cyberspace introductions. A sort of type specimen timeline so to speak. Printed using home printing to show the rise of desktop publishing and a resurgence of the idea of DIY zines.
A Digitally printed (Cyberspace) and hand rendered (Hand written books) perfect bound book with exposed spine to visualise a traditional binding technique. Content will be the essay content with each page typeset in a way in which it visually contextualises the content.
10-25 A4 prints that use the digitally designed laser cut letterpress and digital print techniques to reference a full range of how mass distribution of information has developed. The aesthetics' will come from abstract interpretations and contextualisation of essay content to again show the limitations and potentials of this journey from pre Gutenberg to post Gutenberg periods.
A USB including the PDF spreads to show the progression from a hand rendered book to a digital eBook.

All contained within a typetray that references the traditional storage of letterpress, with the use of streamed fonts within the publication from monotype skyfonts to show the transition of type access.

Fully experiment and test out all initial ideas within this refined delivery though as ideas of testing will be a main part of one of the delivery formats, an inclusion of experiments will be needed as technological developments all start as an experiment.
