Triptych - Visual & Contextual Research
Contextual
When it comes to the production process I want to explore 3 process,s as a reference too my COP within a small section talking about print production. The poster has a long established history so exploring the aesthetics and development of posters over a period of time from the hand rendered to the digital will create a strong meaning to the overall output.
When it comes to the production process I want to explore 3 process,s as a reference too my COP within a small section talking about print production. The poster has a long established history so exploring the aesthetics and development of posters over a period of time from the hand rendered to the digital will create a strong meaning to the overall output.
Paying attention to aesthetics from hand rendered posters too the use of color from faded neutral tones to the neon tones and high end print finishes of contemporary process's.
Taking influence from the texture, us of shape, use of space, style of image, use of type through these eras in conjunction with my further visual research will help add more context and meaning too the overall piece.
Visual references of the apocalypse tapestry, a main focus of my idea taking the use of color tone, texture and image from these examples into a digital and modern repurposing of chaos and apocalypse. Maybe even create vector repurposing of these elements to further show a transition of process's and theories from the old doomsday theories to the current issues with war and violence globally.
A quote to add context too the idea that using content from the bible will be an expansion of my COP, taking forward the idea that the Gutenberg was the first tool used to distribute religion too the masses.
To work alongside the idea of a modern interpretation of the apocalypse use the past doomsday theories to add context through using the dates, the images and the content within these theories.
Visual
Combine all these contextual references and begin feeding in the visual research to add substance to my initial ideas to then form a more refined delivery plan and concept.
Studio Mutanta Arjowiggins
As mentioned in my initial idea stages, using technology as a tool for representing traditional process's Studio Mutanta make there own drawing machines and other mad contraptions like light box exposure units, robot printers, DIY screen printers etc. The unpredictability of these DIY technological print methods create very unpredictable outcomes, this idea of unpredictability relates perfect too ideas of chaos.
Love the idea of exposing simple shapes over complex photos, it creates a juxtaposition of the complex and simple and using a technology driven process adds further context and complexity too it, the exposure brings out shades, gradients, shadows and unpredictable marks add beauty too this. Maybe not for this project but in the future I would really like to begin making things like this to bring technology, DIY and print together.
Yale Graphic Design
The Yale Design show's always have a varied amount of work. But the use of religious signs and calendar dates has influenced my ideas to begin bringing in literal visuals of religion and the doomsday dates. The monotone print works perfect allowing the iconography and type to carry the purpose of the design with the green color carrying the concept and structuring the deconstructed layout together. With a mash of colors I feel it would feel lost.
The addition of paint textures, serif typography and a hand rendered Gif take key elements from hands on process's traditional print and technological print finishes.
Odes Entrange
These digital collages play with analogue texture, photographic effects, scans, digital gradients and typography, the use of statue heads has a certain traditionally too it while the contrasting digital textures bring it into a contemporary output.

The idea of chaos is the main focus within this outcome, focusing on the deconstruction of these layouts, the use of broken up image, the overlaying of imagery, the randomness and motion within the work is what I want to take foreword. The deconstruction and positioning of multiple elements could carry individual elements that carry a range of concepts relating too the idea of a modern day apocalypse and links to the original apocalypse tapestry.
The use of breaking up a shape within monochrome lines and block shapes has a very blueprint feel too it, interpreting this by deconstructing words relating to chaos could add context too the meaning, supported by abstract layouts this disorder of content could help strengthen the message.
These posters use basic shapes to carry type in deconstructed ways, figuring out how to carry deconstructed type in structured ways will help maintain legibility and well digested information within my final design so theres a balance between chaos within the layout and order within how its digested.
The use of pale, pastel colors in desaturated hues contrast with the idea of chaos and violence and would add a certain confusion too the outcome, juxtaposing the idea of violence.
The main concept here is to visualize area, supported by outlines of the map to add context and meaning too the photos and the grid connotes ideas of location grids. This simple use of 3 different types of imagery all strengthen one overall idea, if I create vector repurposing of elements from the apocalypse tapestry and add modern interpretations of violence and global problems as a set of 3 (also a focus point within the 3 process's used) should all benefit each other and the overall concept.

Grafik
The texture and tactility of this analogue print is beautiful but has a certain sinister feel too it through the use of color and the snake like abstract visual. I don't think creating literal examples of violence is important as the poster is meant too be read into, so creating abstract shapes that use hands on process's like this will add this interactivity too it while referencing traditional art technique. Vector iconography and typographic context should add further meaning.
This poster style zine as a whole communicates one idea, but individual panels each share a completely different aspect. Splitting my poster up would allow me to focus on presenting individual scenes of doomsday theories carrying different aesthetic deliveries for each.

Design Everywhere
The cropped large scale repeated glyphs in the background are supported by smaller pt size body copy in the foreground, but the background is the main focus here through the carrying of a digital blue with the foreground using an outline typeface. I feel the foreground is to appreciate the aesthetic quality of the glyphs as whole while the background allows the details to be appreciation. The cropping and selection of certain elements will help me focus on certain visual representations in my poster.
One of my favourite prints so far, the basic cut out shapes in the background have a very hands on aesthetic too them with the images in the negative space adding too this crafty feel with there rough edges and irregularity while the very detailed small point sized type on the foreground has a digital feel that, almost lie a mass of code. Transitioning from the visual too the typographic in contexts that are the peak of there process's the pink been very paper cut the type been very digital and computerized. Showing the full potential of desktop software with the abstract layout and fine detailed printing contrasting with the irregular color block application.

The use of repeated lines, dots and other simple shape can add texture and texture can carry a concept, supported by the limited color palette. Or these textures could be applied too the iconography to add further meaning too them.
The layout of this spread is so simple and the texture contrasts very well with the typography framing the edges up,.
Using alternative type layouts and contrasting type sizes created very effective type only design, as theres a lot of context behind my idea I feel an important and well communicated type layout will benefit no end before starting to apply imagery and other supporting visuals. Playing around with vertical type will show digital typesetting capabilities and using centre justified type will represent letterpress layout limitations.
Further repurposing of traditional type layout with digital additions through photography, outline type and type following curved paths. The use of a bold color photograph contrasts nice with the outline and black type.
Combine all these contextual references and begin feeding in the visual research to add substance to my initial ideas to then form a more refined delivery plan and concept.

The hands on abstract messy aesthetic of these works share the aesthetics of digital and analogue, the block colors and the monochrome scheme also share this idea. While the deconstructed, warped and manipulated type add this feeling of technology.
The digital collage has a very digital feel almost a 90s video game aesthetic with its anime style. The drop shadows and outlines on the type support this digital feel while all the colours, texture, iconography and type works around the central photographic image. This acts as an anchor point and element of structure for this deconstructed design.
Using alternative type styles, alignments, justification, weights in a visual mash up of type and layout principles. The single color green helps carry the idea of heritage, this idea of tradition and representing pastiche needs to be a focus in my religious repurposing.
Odes Entrange
These digital collages play with analogue texture, photographic effects, scans, digital gradients and typography, the use of statue heads has a certain traditionally too it while the contrasting digital textures bring it into a contemporary output.
Gurafika
These Japanese designs have there own cultural vibe too them, having very anime connotations, creating these kinds of links and connotations is important and is carried through a lot with color, use of type and layout. The use of pastel pink and cream contrasts traditional and contemporary through color.
The clashing tones, overlaid type, shape and color within these 2 prints have an element of chaos too them but overall share completley different asthetics, the left feels very digital even with the desaturated tones while the right feels very traditional through the use of overlaying colors. Interesting juxtapositions and contrasts of modern and traditional principles worth exploring in my output.

Eye on design - Shannon Lim
These varied posters all use typography and iconography together to add context and meaning too each other, the idea I think due to the complex message I want to communicate a trio of iconography, type and photography will help strengthen this.
The large collection of icons of these posters within 1 print has influenced an idea that I digitally repurpose and strip down the apocalypse tapestry into 90 icons that as a whole work as a digital repurposed apocalypse tapestry with overlaid imagery that references modern day issues like the Syrian war and terrorism.
By using a body of text and adding iconography in windows like the purple and yellow prints context and meaning can be added too the typography while also showing how type can be communicated in iconography referenced my COP investigations transitioning from the spoken word, to text messaging too emoji.

How these prints are captured takes the traditional back into the digital, capturing prints within a digital background. There is a certain fluidity within the layouts, using type that follows a free motion path, hand rendered imagery, block colors and angled typography all supported within the photography style of the prints making the overall presentation of the prints a design and concept delivery in itself. This digital capturing of something analogue is what I want to explore in the individual elements used within my final outcome.
Joonghyuncho
Both these designs follow a similar format, a format that could reference a letterpress frame within a very digital outcome. Using this idea of a letterpress frame to reference the Gutenberg printing of the bible.
These designs show the limitations and progression of technology within this transition from a letterpress piece of equipment by adding typesetting from digital programs creating orientations and positioning that are not possible with letterpress printing.
Especially with the inclusion of the gradients, the use of such vibrant blues, the outline type, lines and shape and the random abstract marks all hint towards a digital transition. Using the black background would further add that digital vibe.
The use of a serif font has traditional values but to go back to the origins of letterpress and would relate perfect to religion use a blackletter.
Pentagram - Alex J Brown
These clean and effective layouts inspire ideas around simple structured type setting within alternative layouts, making use of the space within the given format, taking up maximum space, using negative space as a design focus, using the edges to add text to frame negative space up are all some of the ideas used here. Getting down a set type layout to then expand on with iconography and imagery to add context would be a good way to merge a type layout that has a purpose and iconography's that have individual focus's.
Love the simple application of vector texture to add tactility to a relatively flat piece.

The use of repeated lines, dots and other simple shape can add texture and texture can carry a concept, supported by the limited color palette. Or these textures could be applied too the iconography to add further meaning too them.
The layout of this spread is so simple and the texture contrasts very well with the typography framing the edges up,.
My Name Is
As mentioned theres an idea of using 3 points as a concept, carried through the use of color, type, image etc, this design uses the triangle shape within a variety of different visual outcomes, the square shapes alternate to make up a triangle all the way too the typographic positioning.
Socio Design
As mentioned before the use of colors that carry positive color connotations could create a juxtaposition and contrast between good and bad, something that would add an element of confusion too the final design, something that is relevant considering all the weird and random doomsday theories I plan on using for additional context.
The use of shape within these large point type shows how simple shape and line can create interesting and complex typographic outcomes, creating custom image based type will add further meaning to the textual content.
Type could be created using folded shapes, paper is the base material for print and in the Gutenberg bible so using some pages folded to create letters would add further context and meaning too the images made.
Fabian Foher
More examples of the simple use of type, image, texture, shape, layout and negative space showing how words can be broken up and interact with shape and pattern to add further context, the world bold simply applied in large point sizes ads impact while the fluid waved 6 adds meaning to the musical term encore.
Using shapes like this could reference paper format (rectangles) and type frame furniture within contrasting color and tone to work as a visual base to then add other elements onto. This one works perfect depending on contrast of shape tone, type and size to carry an outcome that is structured and effectively distributed.
SPIN
Spin merge together the old and the new perfect here, repurposing a black letter font within a technological output making use of gradients, there are 2 process's used here digital printing to show the potentials within gradient printing and screen printed white UV over the top. The use of this method further shows a repurposing of the old using a traditional process that incorporates new inks.
The red and the neon green work very well and add too the abstract and weird aesthetic of the final piece.
